About the event
Join us for a presentation from marine ecologist and project lead Heather Earle. Driven by communities and led by the Hakai Institute, Sentinels of Change is a decade-long project that uses light traps to investigate the ecology and dynamics of critically important species in our island sea: Dungeness crab. The first year of the project saw two traps on Gabriola Island within a network that spanned the Salish Sea. Throughout the spring and summer, two groups of dedicated volunteers checked the traps regularly and watched the crabs (and other species) come and go. Join us to hear about what we found and how important community science is in our efforts to understand ecosystems and environment change.
Heather Earle is a marine ecologist with the Hakai Institute and project lead Sentinels of Change. She works with communities and scientists across the Salish Sea to monitor nearshore ecosystems and track change.
